Students Protest in London, Demand Reversal of Tinubu’s Policies and Release of Detained Protesters

Recently, a group of Nigerian students in London launched a demonstration demanding that President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies be reversed and that the demonstrators who were detained be let to return home. Students who feel that the current policies have exacerbated economic situations and increased hardship for Nigerians, especially the youth, organized the demonstration, which was held close to the Nigerian High Commission. The demonstrators expressed their displeasure with a number of Tinubu’s changes, such as the elimination of gasoline subsidies and the naira’s floating, which have caused living expenses to skyrocket. They demanded that the Nigerian government reevaluate these policies, claiming that they disproportionately impact vulnerable residents, low-income earners, and students, while holding placards and screaming slogans.   During previous demonstrations, the students demanded not only policy changes but also the quick release of their fellow students who were detained in Nigeria. They asserted that the right to protest is a basic democratic freedom and attacked the government for its harsh response to nonviolent protests. Calls for immediate reforms and respect for citizens’ rights are becoming more and more popular both inside and outside of Nigeria, and the protest in London is a part of a larger movement of discontent with the way the current administration is managing the economy.

Don’t Transfer Workers’ Salaries to Local Governments, Labour Tells FG

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly advised the Federal Government not to delegate the payment of workers’ salaries to local governments, citing worries about anomalies, delays, and potential mismanagement. The call comes amid discussions about delegating additional responsibilities to local governments as part of broader governance reforms. Labour leaders are concerned that delegating salary payment responsibilities to local governments could threaten the timely and consistent payment of workers’ wages, notably for teachers, healthcare workers, and other important personnel. They suggest that many local governments are already suffering with inadequate financial capacity, low revenue collection, and inefficiency, which may complicate salary distribution.   The NLC emphasized in a statement that the federal and state governments must continue to place a high premium on the wellbeing of their workforce. The union emphasized how crucial it is to maintain centralization of wage payments in order to prevent needless bureaucratic hold-ups that can exacerbate the financial predicament of already underpaid employees. Labour also cautioned that if workers start to have problems with their pay, any attempt to decentralize salary payments may spark massive demonstrations and industrial action. Before making any significant adjustments to pay structures, they advised the administration to reevaluate the strategy and concentrate on enhancing local government capability.
